Carl’s background is rather eclectic. While earning a degree in anthropology at Columbia College in New York City, he spent two seasons doing Neolithic archaeology in Turkey. After a stint at the Institute of Archaeology at the University of London, he played Greek music professionally for several years in Europe. In the US, Carl worked as a director and music director in theater for some years before becoming an editor, eventually specializing in plain English.
While using this skill in the areas of publishing (mostly book manuscripts and large education projects for Scholastic and McGraw-Hill), advertising, finance and law, Carl has also worked one-to-one with people writing dissertations as well as essays for college and graduate school applications — helping them focus their individual voices in clear, direct English.
